Ashland sits on Lake Superior's Chequamegon Bay, and its compact, 23-venue bar scene matches its small-town scale - mostly classic bars and pubs, including long-running spots like Mugs and Pagac's Bar. The town's historic downtown, known as the "Historical Mural Capital of Wisconsin" for its more than 20 hand-painted murals, has been home to a local microbrewery since 1995, one of the first in northern Wisconsin.
